Envy and the Fibromyalgia Patient

I don't know if you are like me, but as a person who has fibromyalgia I catch myself envying others sometimes. I even envy my previous life. The truth is this disease has taught me that life isn't always perfect. I grew up with many privileges that others simply don't have. I didn't have a family that possessed any sorts of huge problems. If my family did have huge problems,I never knew about it and still don't to this day. I wasn't aware of the suffering that so many people go through because of the choices of family members, health problems, or lack of financial means. I was very lucky in my upbringing. I worked out daily and wore a much smaller size than I do now.
To tell you the truth, I really miss that lifestyle sometimes. I sometimes envy others that have that lifestyle now or one close to it.
Real life is filled with problems though. Jesus wants us to be aware of these problems and help those who are less fortunate. Therefore, if I make being obedient my first priority, I shouldn't want to go back to my old sheltered life. It might receive glory from the world, but it is not a glorious life in God's eyes.

What does the Bible say about envy?

James 4:2-3

You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions

What does the Bible say about venturing out to help others instead of remaining in your sheltered life and shutting others out who need help?

1 John 3:17

But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?

What do you think about these two verses? Do they speak to you? Do you want to add more verses on these subjects? Please let me know your thoughts.

  1. Michelle, so true! All of us envy at one point or another. We should keep our eyes on him.
